A Wonderful Surprise
Well, my wife laid plans for March 31, 2008 and told me not to plan anything. I believe she told me almost a month in advance, and today I finally got to enjoy the surprise... she bought us tickets to go see Michael Card play a show in an intimate setting at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. As he's one of our favorite Christian musicians, we thoroughly enjoyed the show and had a quick chance to catch him before the show to give him a thank you card.
For those who don't know, Michael Card has been doing music for quite some time. He has the particular distinctions of being an excellent musician and an excellent theologian, and his songs often teach you more about Jesus than you'll learn in a book. I highly recommend him to you!

If I were to gauge an artist in terms of (a) how long I've listened to them, and (b) how much of an impact that artist has had on my life, Michael Card is the clear winner. I've probably listened to him for twenty years (like back when he wore the dorky 80s sweaters, even). I have more albums by him on my iPod than by any other artist (Starflyer 59 comes in a close second).
The first song of his that I remember being significant to me was Scandalon. I was a kid when I first heard it. Even today, though, I'd say it is by far my favorite of all he's done. (And since I know you're a big reader, I recommend "Practice in Christianity" by Soren Kierkegaard as a good companion piece to Scandalon.)
I think my favorite album, though, is Brother to Brother -- the one he did with John Michael Talbot. I don't know if I admire it more for the music or for the message.

Thanks for the post Matt. I just had a listen to Scandalon (have The Life here on my work computer). I was introduced to Michael Card when my father gave me a tape of Poeima. I'm still greatly encouraged by many songs on there, especially at various times in my life The Edge. Oh, and at the concert he played New Jerusalem from Unveiled Hope, another song I absolutely love.
Thanks for the book recommendation, too! I'll be sure to check it out and see about adding it to the reading list.
