Sporting a new MacBook in Budapest

Well... the big news of the day is that we're in Budapest, Hungary! Woohoo! I flew out with my wife and the other Ubercart folks for Drupalcon Szeged yesterday and arrived safely this afternoon (local time) in Budapest. Unfortunately, everyone else's luggage did not arrive safely... my distrust of baggage handling is justified. I politely offered to share...

We're still excited about the upcoming Drupalcon, though, and are looking forward to hooking up with other Drupallers while we're in Budapest. If you're around, feel free to drop me a line.

The other big news is that I recently purchased a MacBook primarily for Drupal development. Hopefully it will encourage me to work on a few stories I have going as well. I'm already well on my way to having a solid, familiar development environment. It's quite a shift, but fortunately Firefox, jEdit (my IDE), and Filezilla (for FTP) are cross-platform and/or Java based apps. Now if I could just figure out why MAMP no longer starts Apache... Puzzled

I'll have you know that I never had a problem with my baggage being lost until I started traveling with you, Szrama.

Have you tried textmate? It's pretty good, also check out XAMPP (http://www.apachefriends.org) instead of MAMP. I have had much better luck with it.

Have fun at Drupalcon, wish I was there!

I tried Textmate on the recommendation of several friends, but I'm not sure I'll end up using it for serious development. I heavily use jEdit's function browser and PHP parsing capabilities, and I often use the Diff plugin as well. Textmate's bundles are nice, but they don't quite make up for these features.

I won't rule it out, though. A couple of folks have told me they used their open source and cross-platform tools as a way to ease their transition into Mac specific software. We'll see what happens with me. Laughing out loud

Well, when it comes to MAMP, there is a third option besides the two big prepackaged solutions (XAMPP and MAMP from living-e). That is Macports (or fink, if that's your thing).

I've set up my own MAMP with Macports and Porticus, and I'm quite happy. Although there's no fancy GUI, it integrates much better with OS X and doesn't come with the overhead that the other packages do.

I should probably take it upon myself to create a howto for it, but in the meantime:

I've been using MAMP for quite some time on my Macbook and have been happy with it. The only issue I've had with Apache starting was related to this issue...
